Regardless of the type of car you drive, you need to perform preventative maintenance to keep the vehicle running safely, reliably and efficiently. While some car parts need to be checked only in the long run, others need regular maintenance.

Highlighted below are some essential car components that should be checked on a regular basis to keep the vehicle running at its peak.

Engine

The engine is the heart of every car. Without it, your car can't convert fuel energy into the power needed to propel your car. Your car engine needs regular maintenance because it is made of many running components that generate a lot of heat when the engine is running.

If engine oil and coolant levels are not checked regularly, engine overheating can occur as a result of insufficient oil and coolant within the engine. Engine oil wears down over time and loses its lubricating and cooling qualities. If ineffective oil isn't replaced with fresh oil, there is a risk of engine parts rubbing against each other and wearing down prematurely, resulting in costly engine repairs.

It is best practice to replace your engine oil filter when you're changing the oil. Fresh engine oil works best with a new oil filter.

Transmission

The transmission in your car is the component that converts the power of the engine into the rotational force that makes your wheels turn.

Like the engine, the transmission comprises several moving parts that need to be kept properly lubricated. They also generate a significant amount of heat during car operation. Excessive heat can damage your car's transmission.

Transmissions rely on clean transmission fluid to remain cool and well-lubricated. Over time, the fluid can leak or become worn out from normal car use. Regular transmission fluid changes are necessary to keep your car's transmission healthy and working well.

Brakes

Brakes are an important safety component of every car. They allow you to slow down or halt your vehicle while you're on the road. Unfortunately, many car owners ignore the importance of properly functioning brakes until they realise that their vehicle has lost braking ability on the road.

Regular brake inspection and diagnosis can help keep your brakes in top working condition at all times.

Your car has several other components such as wheels and tyres, lighting systems, and the vehicle's computer that need to be checked regularly to ensure optimal vehicle safety, performance, and lifespan. Visit a car service centre near you to discuss your vehicle's maintenance needs.
